How to Prepare for Your SEO ConsultationLast week I wrote a post on The Top 10 Things to Consider When Searching for a Professional SEO Company, useful information when you are searching for a quality internet marketing company. However, the next step in the process, preparing for the consultation, is just as important.

So where do you begin?

As the old cliché goes, “You can’t know where you are going until you know where you’ve been.” Meaning: Look at what your website is currently doing for search engine optimization. Namely:

  • How much of your revenue comes from SEO?
  • Are you tracking search queries; Google analytics, etc…?
  • How much traffic from search engines?
  • How many conversions from search engines?
  • Is you website currently search engine optimized? If so, how?

Essentially, you are providing the consultant with a blueprint of your website. This allows them to understand where you have been, so they can develop a strategy to take you forward. Help them, help you.

Next, look at how your company is communicating with and educating people. For example:

  • Digital assets: blog, newsletter, articles, videos, etc.
  • Social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

Just about every website has at least one of these. As my co-worker, Aveyln Austin, says, “We don’t want you to recreate the wheel, we want to use the assets you currently have to work for you.” Work smart, not hard.

Finally, what are you looking to get out of a search engine optimization campaign?

Here are some goals to consider:

  • Direct traffic from search engines
  • Online reputation management
  • First Page domination on Google
  • Boosting sales for e-commerce sites
  • Rankings in search engines
  • Building an image
  • Direct marketing/lead generation

The list goes on…

Hopefully this information helps your conversation go more smoothly. Remember, the more information you provide the consultant with about your website and company, the better they will be able to help you create a winning SEO campaign.
