I have to confess… I love Magento. With several of my clients using Magento as an ecommerce platform, I’ve definitely had the opportunity to use the platform on many occasions. The top reason why I love this platform so much compared to other content management systems (CMS) I’ve worked with in the past is that Magento, unlike many other platforms, makes it incredibly easy for the novice user to set up various Google tools, such as Google Analytics, Google AdWords conversion tracking, Google shopping feeds for Merchant Center, Google Website Optimizer tests and creating a Google Sitemap. I’ll be covering how to set up these Google Tools to work with Magento in several upcoming posts. Today, we’ll focus on setting up Google Analytics in Magento.
First, go to your Google Analytics account. You’ll need to grab the profile number from your account to enter into Magento. Copy the profile ID.
Next, log in to Magento and navigate to System > Configuration. From the menu at left, Google API. This will be a screen we will also use for other Google Tools we eventually add to Magento.
Under Google Analytics, set Enable to “yes” and paste the Google Analytics profile ID in the Account Number box. Save the configuration by clicking “Save Config”.
That’s it! Now Magento will add the Google Analytics tracking code to all pages of your website. Easy!
