Video Search Optimization

At Search Mojo, we recently made a video about the Search Mojo Corporate Culture. When our Marketing Director, Cady, was uploading the video, it got me thinking about where videos should be uploaded, along with strategies for excellent keyword tagging. Having strong keywords is important because you want to show up with related videos, on several different search queries, and in universal search.

KEYWORD RESEARCH

For search marketing, many pros use the Google keyword tool, but video search is different than organic search. YouTube has a keyword targeting tool, but it still needs to be developed to provide more accurate data.

Instead, try looking at YouTube suggest and Google suggest. If you have an idea of what types of keywords might be relevant, try typing them in the search box and check out what other words appear after that might be relevant to your video. For our video about Corporate Culture, we tried typing “Corporate Culture A,” “Corporate Culture B,” and so on down the alphabet to find new ideas.

Another idea for finding keywords is to find similar videos on YouTube and check out their YouTube Insight snapshot data if it’s available. These insights are similar to Google Analytics keyword data and show what keywords the video ranks for in search.

Ranking factors for YouTube videos include keyword optimization, age of the video on the site, as well as the number of views and engagement such as likes vs. dislikes and the amount of users who have added the video as their favorite.

WHERE SHOULD I POST MY VIDEO?

At Search Mojo, we recommend hosting the video on your site and creating a video Sitemap for that video.

If you want to syndicate the videos to several places on the web, you can upload videos to your accounts on YouTube, Vimeo, Google, Bing, Metacafe, Yahoo Video and Daily Motion. If posting to several locations, try optimizing the videos for a wider set of keywords. Now that there are so many different types of media and categories present in search results, it is more important than ever to optimize your video to help rank in each video platform. Ranking in the platforms may help push your video to rank in universal SERPs!
