Why Is Danny Sullivan Trying to Sell Me VIAGRA?

As an online marketer, my spam folder is constantly full of, well, let’s face it… CRAP. But one piece of spam caught my eye, because the sender’s name was “Danny Sullivan”. At first, I didn’t even look at the subject line of the email. I was surprised to see an email from Danny Sullivan in my inbox, and even initially frustrated that it ended up in my spam folder. Shame on you, spam folder! How dare you treat one of the biggest names in search engine optimization that way!!

Ah, but then I read the subject line: Erectile Dysfunction pill. Obiously THIS Danny Sullivan is not the same one I know. (or is it?)

The spammer got it half right. By using Danny’s name, it certainly seemed like an email targeted towards me, a search engine marketer who knows Danny Sullivan and his work. But on the other side, why oh why do spammers think I need one of the following:

  • help with my erectile dysfunction
  • help with penis enlargement
  • help “pleasing my lady”

Maybe Danny’s name was just one in a long list of aliases, and they happened to email someone who would take notice of that name. I think that’s the likely scenario. But it’s good to know that Danny’s got a side business, in case this little SMX thing doesn’t go anywhere. ;)
