Yahoo gets “green”, includes NYC cabbies and other “green” information

For the sake of space (and the average attention span), I can’t go into the entire Global Warming issue in just this post, we’re all well aware of the topic by now, right? Al Gore… yadda yadda yadda…

It was announced on May 14th, in NYC, that Yahoo! is joining the “green” cause and has begun a challenge to find the greenest city in the U.S (Yahoo! Be a Better Planet). Accompanying the announcement, Yahoo! gave the NYC’s cab association 10 hybrid cars.

With the multi-megawatt backdrop of New York City’s Times Square, Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) will issue a challenge today in search of the greenest city in America. Co-founder David Filo, joined by actor Matt Dillon and Global Green USA CEO Matt Petersen, will introduce “Be a Better Planet” (, a program that empowers Americans to take action against climate change. Consumers participate by using Yahoo! tools, resources and communities to become better planetarians.

The irony of the “multi-megawatt backdrop” is not lost on this blogger.

What does the winner of the challenge get? A free fleet of hybrid taxi cabs or a cash donation to be used toward “green” projects within the winning city.

An additional source for “green” education is the new Yahoo! Green climate change website, where you can find out how you can affect change on the environment with the little changes you make toward lowering CO2 emissions.

“Americans everywhere are taking notice of the increasingly dire predictions around global climate change,” said Yahoo!’s David Filo. “We want to make it easy for consumers to do something, as well as help them build enduring habits that can truly make a difference. We believe many small individual actions can add up to significant change.”

Yahoo! Green will have specifically focused information regarding environmental issues, information, blogs, shopping tips… you name it. It’s being billed as a “one-stop-shop” stated Meg Garlinghouse, Director of Yahoo! for Good.

Even Mikhail Gorbachev and his birth mark are getting involved in Global Green USA effort where you can find a multitude of information, resources and become more involved. A user friendly site, in my opinion.

The intention of this post is not as an advertisement for what Yahoo! is launching, but merely the beginning of a discussion regarding our individual involvement in lowering carbon (CO2) emissions and how businesses are helping us little guys get involved on a larger scale.

I read an announcement earlier in 2007 by Dell (January) regarding their intention to help reduce or “off-set” carbon emissions. For every laptop and desktop sold, $2 & $6 donations will be made to The Conservation Fund or to support the “Plant a tree for me” program. On their site, Dell states that 100% of the donations will be used to plant trees in an effort to neutralize carbon emissions from the computers they sell.

“Dell recognizes that offsetting carbon dioxide emissions with tree planting is an effective and inexpensive way to fight climate change,” executive director Eric Carlson said. “The beauty of this program is that anyone can do it and make a difference.”

Obviously it’s hip to be “green” and I’m OK with that. I’m just glad that big business is starting to listen to their customer’s concerns over negative climate change.

On May 10th, 2007 IBM announced a new program called Project Big Green in their efforts to assist in the reduction of CO2 emissions by refocusing $1 billion (per year) to increase it’s company’s efficiency across the board.

In future posts, I will elaborate more on how we as an industry (SEO, Internet companies and the like) who use computers as our main tools for business and income can contribute to minimizing our CO2 footprint and what the big guys are doing to help us achieve that goal.
